What does it mean to be healthy??

For most people visiting their doctor can have it’s challenges. Patients may not understand what is actually being asked of them in terms of their health, or simply the medical language being used is not understood by many. This leads to a breakdown in communication, and leaving you wondering about how to actually manage your health. So what is a healthy diet? What is a healthy lifestyle?

In general terms a healthy diet would be one that consist of whole foods (nothing from a box, can, or bag) fruits, vegetables, fats from plant sources, and grains/beans. As you can see this is very broad and can translate into almost any type of diet out there. To avoid this confusion, there are more pressing questions to ask when attempting to change ones health.

The first question that  must be asked is “ What does healthy look like to me?”Once you start to take inventory of that, you can then ask yourself, “ Is my current way of eating/living serving me in any way, and do I want to make any changes to that.”

Many times I find that patients may have to sit with those two questions for awhile before they can get any direction, or move forward with actually changing their health. Taking inventory of our thoughts and perceptions of health allow us to identify patterns that we have developed over time that really no longer are serving us. It is human nature to form attachments to things that bring us comfort, soothe feelings of melancholy, or provide us with an identity.

Here at Vital Root Total Wellness we make it a priority to understand our patients, and ensure that they understand health is not just what you put into your body. We make recommendations and guide patients through changes they feel are best for themselves to improve their overall well being.
